Be Careful When Searching for Debt Relief Solutions

Filed Under Debt and Debt Relief

When you’re faced with a mountain of financial problems, it’s only natural for you to close your eyes and wish they would just magically disappear. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you wish, when you open your eyes those problems are still there. They won’t go away on their own; you have to take action to make that happen.

Sometimes that action means grinding it out on your own, making calls to your creditors, negotiating repayment agreements. But that’s a tall order and most people don’t have the will to do it themselves nor the experience to know how to make it work. When that’s the case, most people will search for debt relief solutions from a 3rd party or service.

If you look in the phone book or on the Internet, you’ll find a lot of debt relief services advertised. Consumer debt relief has become rather big business of late. It’s important to understand right from the start that not every service or company is created equal. In fact, there are a lot of debt relief scams out there that would be more than happy to promise you an end to your financial problems in return for a small up-front fee. You’ve got to be on guard!

Most reputable debt relief programs will charge a fee, but it won’t be up-front. They’ll charge it on the back-end after they’ve negotiated repayment plans for you with your creditors. Here’s how it usually works.

You’ll need to fill out a complete credit and debt application with the agnecy – they need to understand exactly where you are with your financial problems. Then debt relief counselors will speak with each of your creditors – they usually have “inside” numbers to call because they’re in part working with and for the creditors too. In fact, they often receive some remuneration from them because they’re servicing them as well. In any event, counselors construct repayment agreements with each creditor based on what you can afford to pay.

Then the debt relief agency will act as the distributor of those monthly payments. You will in effect pay them a lump sum every month and they will in turn make all the individual payments to your creditors. This is usually required by the creditors and quite common in the industry. The agency will also charge a small fee each month that comes out of the lump sum payment. This is how they make their money and stay in business which is again, quite common.

What you get is a fair degree of debt relief help in return for a small fee. Your total monthly payments are lowered so the fee isn’t any added burden. Your creditors don’t usually ding your credit so you get a break there too. And of course, you have been relieved of the uncomfortable chore of dealing with your creditors one on one. Debt relief solutions can be a win-win for everyone.

So before you enter into any agreement with any debt relief agency or debt group, make sure you have all the fees and services spelled out for you up-front. Reputable agencies will have no trouble doing that. Don’t let yourself be forced into signing anything you don’t feel completely comfortable with either. Most agencies won’t have a problem with you thinking it over and returning at another time. Only when you’re comfortable and are ready to “pull the trigger,” should you sign anything. And if you’re asked to pay an up-front fee, walk away!

Obtaining debt relief is indeed a very difficult proposition. When you can’t do it on your own, it’s okay to seek help. Just make sure you’re careful about who you do business with.
