Tips for Legally Eliminating Credit Card Debt

Filed Under Debt and Debt Relief

Today, people who want to eliminate credit card debt legally have limited options. They can tough it out and try to save enough money to pay down the debt over time – usually a long time. Or they can seek the assistance of debt management service companies, financial counselors, or the credit card companies themselves.

Managing your finances can be really difficult, especially if you’re new to the game and don’t have any real knowledge about handling money. Dealing with credit card debt can be even more difficult, particularly if you’ve fallen behind on your monthly payments. When that’s the case, what should you do? And what should you do first?

First things first – Contact Your Creditors

If you’re trying to eliminate credit card debt, take the bull by the horns and contact your credit card company. They can actually be helpful sometimes. Get in touch with their customer service department and honestly explain your financial situation. Simply ask for their help working out of the hole you’re in.
Sometimes they can waive late fees and penalties. Sometimes they can reduce your payments and/or interest rate. Sometimes they can even postpone payments for a time.

Of course, sometimes they may offer you no help at all in which case you can ask to speak to a supervisor and try the honest approach again or you can choose to hang up. If you get nowhere with them, you’ve only wasted a phone call after all.

If you strike out with the credit card company, you can seek help from an outside financial counseling service. Consumer Credit Counseling is a non-profit organization that helps people trying to reduce their debt. They will basically put you on a budget and work with your credit card company (and other creditors) to build a repayment plan that can work for you. They get reimbursed by retaining a small fee each month that’s built into the repayment plan. They’re also reimbursed through contracts with major credit providers. There are also plenty of other financial counseling services and debt relief programs out there ready to give you debt help.

Now Do Your Part and Save Money

Once you have a plan in place to pay off credit card debt, you need to take the next step and save money. You’ll need to change your spending habits and cultivate an appreciation for putting money in the bank. If you can do this, you’ll start to see progress and that progress will create a positive momentum for you. You won’t just be eliminating credit card debt; you’ll be eliminating all of your debt. It takes some work and some discipline, but it’s worth it.
